Roel started in 1983 as 11 year old on piano & organ and played in a brass band on horns. Both disciplines (keyboards and hons) have co-existed for several years. As trumpet/bugle player he played in several musical competitions and played in small and large ensembles. Music styles covered contemporary, Dixie, classical and pop-jazz. After years of practicing different genres in 1991 as student he found a nice spot as keyboard player in a jazz-rock fusion band that played in style of Chick Corea & Koinonia. The love for this genre remained although there were some side steps in the pop-funk and real book jazz directions. In the period 1991-1995 Roel experimented a lot with synthesizers with focus on creating vintage sounds in combination with own compositions. This combination of vintage and jazz has remained his trademark which can be found back in the songs of Groovelation.
